Wild Horse Race
This is perhaps the most amazing thing I’ve seen in a while. We got to witness it while in Montana.
This is how it works: Several teams of 3 men try to control wild horses with a rope and saddle it. Not only do they have to put a saddle on this beast, they have to ride it. Not only do they have to saddle and ride this brute of an animal, they have to ride it around a drum on the far side of the arena, though if your horse pulls you over there I suppose you don’t have to ride it far.
The footage is blurry due to my camera’s deficiencies in night environments, but you get the idea. It’s like the late Roman Venatio, only the horses don’t usually die. Whatever your stance on the “Wild Horse Race” is, you have to admit it’s pretty spectacular. It’s not everyday you see men engaging horses in gladiatorial combat.
I have to say though, I’ve been impressed by the care the rodeos have shown for the animals. They often switch out the animals they’re roping, so they don’t have do endure it all night. The goat tying contest in North Dakota switched out their goats every 3rd kid. They have protective helmety things for the calves they rope. It seems that all of the events are based on things you would actually do on a cattle ranch, i.e. roping calves, breaking horses, maneuvering horses, jousting… ok, maybe bull riding is just for fun, but you get the point.
Anyways, enjoy the blurry “Wild Horse Race”/man vs beast footage.
