Know Thyself

July 12, 2012

Recently, as a part of the internship with EE, we’ve been taking our fair share of personality and strengths tests.  Why?  So we can better understand our strengths are and employ them efficiently, as well as learn about others and how they work.  This is the 3rd time I’ve taken the Myers-Briggs (1st time with a legit test) and thus far I’ve turned out to be an ENTP each time.

What the heck is an ENTP?  Pretty awesome, that’s what, but seriously…

They Myers-Briggs uses opposing pairs of letters to indicate personality traits.

Introvert (I) vs Extrovert (E)

iNtuitive(N) vs Sensing (S)

Feeling (F) vs Thinking (T)

Perceiving (P) vs Judging (J)

You’re either one or the other.  There are 16 different personality type combinations.  I’m not going to go into the descriptions, because they can be quite complex, but I thought it would be cool to see what the makeup of my readers are.  If you’ve already taken a Myers-Briggs, feel free to take the poll.  If you’re interested, I’ve included a link to a short one here: Myers-Briggs Test.

Much research has been done that correlates Briggs-Meyers to understanding a person’s behavior. For example, ES people have a higher chance of being overweight (food dependance) than IN’s. INFP is a combo needs to watch out for mental addictions (i.e. porn). That’s because Extroverts are social, and S’s relate to their world through the 5 senses – thus going out to eat with friends a lot. N’s relate to the world through their minds, their thoughts, thus the propensity for mental addictions. People whose scores in each of the 4 categories are more in the middle (50% E, 50% I) tend to be most successful in life, and conversely many people who are in jail have scores that tank out to either edge of the continum (100% pts E, 0% pts I). Opposites attract, so an ESTJ may likely marry an INFP. The idea is to learn about your mate and respect these differences so that your marital “team” appreciates and makes use of all its strengths and be loving and helpful regarding the weaknesses. But thanks, thanks, thanks be to God who gives us the victory. We are new creatures in Christ and not stuck being the summation of a set of 4 letters. Yipee!

    Hi there,
I have been doing a lot of research on MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) lately and I think I have some information that can help you learn about an ENTP. In MBTI, there are 4 temperaments. Each is a group that contains 4 personalities that have similar life outlooks and general approaches to life. An ENTP is known as the ‘Inventor’ and is part of the Rationalist Temperament. This temperament is big-picture and future-oriented. It looks at the big picture and strives for mastery and competency. An ENTP prefers to think in terms of abstract thoughts and connections instead of in terms of real world, concrete terms. Rationalist are strategic and dislike incompetency and being told what to think.

When talking about thought processes, the ENTP has a leading function of extraverted intuition which starts developing around 6-12 years of age. This function is all about generating tons of ideas and possibilities to link them together in order to construct a bigger picture view. This personality type is usually very fluent when speaking and makes eye contact with others during personal interactions. Emotions are generally left out in decision making and generated theories.

The secondary function is introverted thinking which starts developing between age 13 and 21. This function is an complex inner network of logical rules and principles. Finding justice and truth are more important than keeping harmony with people involved who have faulty principles or beliefs. Introverted thinking is a preference that is very good with dealing with details and analyzing every little part of a situation.

The reason that ENTP is known as an inventor is because extroverted intuition has a huge capacity for generating alternative options. When the fault is found in ideas during an experiment, a quick alternative is readily available. Introverted thinking can help this individual analyze the true problems of the system and once discovered, a method can be generated quickly.

I hope this helped you get a better understanding of the ENTP and I can’t emphasize your title enough. KNOW THYSELF! Great post.

That’s very interesting. A lot of that resonates with me. Thank’s for the comment, it’s giving me some things to think about!
